Mark your calendars for the dog event of the summer at L.L. Bean, in Freeport, Maine! Taking place on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at L.L. Bean’s Discovery Park (right next to the iconic big boot), Paws for a Cause is the Coastal Humane Society’s 5K, Walk, and Festival for shelter pets. The fun begins at 8:00 AM with the 5K that winds its way through downtown Freeport. Followed by the Walk at 8:30 AM. Then stay for a day filled with fun for the whole family both two legged and four!
For the dogs there will be contests for Best Kisser, Best Barker, Best Tail Wagger, etc. Or live your Westminster dreams by entering the Amateur “Worst in Show” Competition! Prizes will be awarded for anything that makes the judges laugh, and include L.L. Bean gift cards. In addition there will be a water park, K9 demonstrations, and even massages for dogs and their humans who participated in the fundraiser 5K.
For the adults there will be a “Meow-mosa & Drooly Mary” post race tent, ask a vet question and answer session for all your pet concerns, and presentations including one by Peter Zheutlin, the author of Rescue Road, recounting the efforts of one man who rescued thousands of dogs! And not to be left out, for the kids there will be a Vet for a Day booth, face painting, and games. Teddy Bear looking a little worse for wear? Bring your stuffed animal friend for a tune up with Dr. Mandie Wehr and the shelter clinic staff. There’s something to do for everyone at Paws for a Cause! All proceeds to benefit the Coastal Humane Society. Since their founding 65 years ago, the Coastal Humane Society has cared for and adopted out tens of thousands of animals, and each one is spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, tested, and ready for a new home. They also offer a number of programs and services committed to compassionate care and excellent animal placements, returning lost animals to their families, providing support and resources for pet owners, and educating the community. Coastal Humane Society receives no federal funding and relies on donations to help the over 3,000 stray, abused or abandoned cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets, chinchillas, birds, hamsters and guinea pigs they care for annually.
