The first stop on Asa’s World Tour of Maine was to Peabody-Fitch Woods and Narramissic Farm in Bridgton, Maine. Consisting of 252 acres, this dog friendly historic site includes trails that range from easy to moderate, and even remnants of an historic road that once led to Denmark. On a clear day there are views of the Maine and New Hampshire mountains. It is also the location of the Bridgton Historical Society, that during the summer offers tours of the historic house, barn and blacksmith shop.
On the rainy day we visited, we took a scenic .5 mile stroll along Peggy’s Pasture Loop, which is an universal access trail that loops the edge of the woods around a field on a six-foot wide, gravel surface, with scenic views of the buildings and fields.
For those feeling more adventurous, or if we had a sunny day, there is the Quarry Trail. This 1 mile trail leads through the woods, over a bog bridge, up a steeper section to a granite quarry once used by the Peabody family.
Dogs are welcome to explore the trails year round, but they are not allowed in the historic buildings. Dogs must be on-leash on Peggy’s Pasture Loop, and under control on the Quarry Trail. This is a carry out park, so please clean up after your pets and bring it with you when you leave. The trails are managed by the Loon Echo Land Trust, and parking can be found at 46 Narramissic Road, Bridgton, Maine.
Take a stroll through history past the barn built in the 1830s…
…and the house originally built in 1797 and later renovated in the 1830s to reflect the Federal style of the period.
Peggy’s Pasture Loop Trail meanders its way through the woods…
…past fields…
…with benches along the way to stop and ponder what life was like here in the early 19th century.
Peabody-Fitch Woods in Bridgton, Maine, rocks! And not just because Asa started his world tour here. There’s a quarry on the property too! We hope to return to hike that trail on a sunny day.
