Pleasant Hill Preserve, Scarborough, Maine

On Monday, my friend Hera told me it was National Leave Work Early Day. What better way to celebrate than by taking Mom and Dad out of the office for a dog friendly walk at Pleasant Hill Preserve in Scarborough, Maine! Located in a residential neighborhood, it feels like a world away with its meandering trails through fields and over wetlands, surrounded by singing birds, sweet smells of wild flowers, and beautiful views of the headwaters of the Spurwink River, with reminders of its farming past. Maintained by the Scarborough Land Trust it consists of over 2 miles of trails that range from easy to moderate.

On the day we visited we explored Eleanor’s Trail, which is a Universal Access/ADA Trail. This short 0.40 mile path is made of crushed stone with a few gentle grade changes, that leads to a view of the fields. We then briefly explored the Swallows Field Trail along the Phin Sprague Boardwalk. However, it being tick season, we didn’t venture further onto the grassy trail.

Dogs are allowed at Pleasant Hill Preserve. They must be on-leash on Eleanor’s Trail. However, they are allowed off-leash under owner’s control on the other trails. As always, please respect the wildlife that call this area home, and always pick up pet waste. Parking can be found at 270 Pleasant Hill Road, Scarborough, Maine. Look for the sign and kiosk!

Eleanor’s Trail is designed to accommodate wheelchairs, walkers, strollers and other assistive devices. Please note no bikes allowed. Dogs must remain on-leash on Eleanor’s Trail.
Monty’s Trail is a 1.25 mile loop beginning and ending at the Swallow Barn, and includes fields and forest, with narrow and steep areas, boardwalks, stairs with railings, roots and rocks.
Swallows Field Trail is mowed grass and includes the “Happy Days” Phin Sprague Boardwalk.
For over 180 years this property was farmed, before being purchased by the Scarborough Land Trust in 2014. You can still see traces of this use with the remains of a barn, stone walls, and apple trees that line the trails. There are benches throughout out the property inviting visitors to stop and imagine what the farm may have been like, or simply to relax enjoy the sweet smells and sounds of nature, in this neighborhood oasis.
