Puppy Insomnia

Puppy Insomnia is a sleep disorder that is characterized by difficulty falling and/or staying asleep due to living with a puppy, and I have a bad case of it!  Dogs suffering from Puppy Insomnia usually have one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty falling asleep due to a Puppy pestering you.
  • Waking up often during the night because a Puppy only needs 5 minutes of sleep before wanting to play again.
  • Difficulty falling back asleep because a Puppy is chewing on you.
  • Waking too early in the morning because a Puppy can’t tell time.
  • Feeling tired upon waking because a Puppy kept you up all night while your parents peacefully sleep upstairs.

Treatment for Puppy Insomnia includes behavioral therapy. Behavioral approaches help you to change a Puppy’s behaviors that may worsen a Dog’s insomnia and to teach the Puppy new behaviors to promote sleep. Techniques such as exercising the Puppy to the point of complete exhaustion, relaxation Puppy massages before bedtime, and reconditioning the Puppy to understand he’s not missing out on any fun while sleeping may be useful.  But I feel the best cure for my current condition is for Asa to sleep upstairs with Mom and Dad so I can have some peace and quiet!
