Yesterday I knew Mom and Dad needed to get outside in the fresh air to clear their heads and stretch their legs. But where to go? I wanted to make it a place we haven’t visited in a long time, to help heal their hurting hearts. So I scrolled through Chuck Billy’s research, and decided that the Scarborough Marsh section of the Eastern Trail would be perfect! The last time Chuck Billy and I visited there was in 2017 for a lovely winter hike, and yesterday it was just as beautiful as I remembered.
The Scarborough section of the Eastern Trail is a scenic place to walk with your dog. Stretching from Scarborough through Old Orchard Beach to Saco, Maine, this off-road section of the Eastern Trail offers 8 miles of easy walking. Although we would love to hike the entire 16 miles round trip, we limited it to just the Scarborough Marsh portion of the trail. The Scarborough Marsh is approximately 2,200 acres, making it Maine’s largest salt marsh. This 2.5 miles stretch of gravel and compact dirt trail, with a footbridge, is popular with walkers, runners, bicyclists, and birdwatchers.
Dogs must remain on-leash. Please stay on the marked trail to prevent erosion and damage to plants, be respectful of the wildlife, and as always pick up after your dog. Parking for this popular section of the trail is available in small lots on Pine Point Road and Old Blue Point Road.
