The Sanford-Springvale Rail Trail is an easy dog friendly walk that runs from the Lebanon town line to Springvale, and passes through Sanford, Maine. Following the former corridor of the old Portland to Worcester rail line, this 6 miles one way trail is a straight, flat walk through forest and neighborhoods, with scenic views of Deering Pond. Along the trail there are also smaller paths including the Glenn K. Wildes Wildflower Trail and the Deering Pond Hall Environmental Reserve Trail that follows the pond’s shoreline. However, we did not explore those trails and stayed on the main path the day we visited. The pond is a popular fishing spot, and we were amused to learn from a local resident that Deering Pond is rumored to be bottomless because once a railroad car entirely sank in its depths!
Dogs are allowed under owner’s control. Please note there are road crossings if you walk the entire 6 miles, and it is also very popular with ATVs. There is limited parking at the Hanson Ridge Road and the Oak Street trailheads.
