Santa, I’ll Sing You What I Want

Asa here. I’m working on writing my letter to Santa. This year rather than write a traditional note, I thought I’d put my thoughts to musical notes by writing him a song. Santa must get bored reading the same type of letters each year. But what tune to parody?

There’s the Spice Girls’ “Wannabe.”

If you wanna be my Santa, you gotta give me good gifts
(Gotta give me good gifts)
Toys that last forever, squeakies that never end…

I don’t want no sweaters, or robes that dry
Got enough collars, don’t even try
I’ll bark you what I want, what I really, really want…

But that “I’ll bark you what I want, what I really, really want” part sounds very rude and demanding. I don’t want to come across as a spoiled pup to Santa. I’m thankful for whatever he gives me.

Perhaps something a little more traditional to the tune of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas”?

I don’t want a lot for Christmas
There is nothing that I need
I don’t care about new squeakies underneath the Christmas tree
I just want a gift from you
More than toys and balls to throw
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is treats
Yeah!

But I like toys, and if I get too many treats then I’ll be starting the New Year on the green bean diet. Besides, no one should ever think of messing with the greatest Christmas song ever written. After all, Mariah Carey is the Queen of Christmas, and is good friends with Santa!

What about Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”? She’s so unusual, and so would a letter to Santa written to the tune of her iconic song!

I wake up, under the Christmas lights
My Santa says, “Dog, you’ve been a good boy, right?”
Oh, Santa Claus, you know I try to be one
But dogs — they wanna have fun
Oh, dogs just wanna have fun!

Hmmm, that doesn’t quite convey the right message either. I don’t want to give Santa any doubts about my spot on the Nice List. I think I need to put on my thinking cap before singing my letter to Santa…

Writing a song for Santa is a lot more difficult than I realized!
