Stowaway Stunt Squirrels’ Shenanigans

Well you don’t see that every day. In fact, I’m not really sure what I saw! It all unfolded right in front of us as we were driving down the road. Before us was a truck, and next thing we know we saw a squirrel flying from underneath it! Mom gasped in horror, afraid for its safety. Dad swerved, just barely missing it. And I watched as the squirrel safely made it to the side of the road. We all assumed it must have either got hit by the truck, or somehow jumped to avoid being hit based on the odd position it took of tucking into a ball midair and rolling once he hit the ground, before running to the side of the road.

Next thing we know, another squirrel came flying out from the truck! This time it appeared from underneath the side of the truck. It looked like it was purposely diving, like an Olympic swimmer entering the pool. Thankfully, it landed on its feet, before scurrying to safety. We were all puzzled. Did that squirrel appear from under the truck bed? The truck couldn’t have almost hit two squirrels, could it?

Before we could discuss what we saw, a third squirrel appeared! This time it had climbed up on something in the truck bed. We held our breath. Dad slowed down to put a safe distance between us and the back of the truck, as we watched to see what would happen. This squirrel did not jump. Instead, it climbed back down out of view, into the bed of the truck. Shortly thereafter, the truck turned down a side road.

This is where the story ends, and my questions began. Who were these squirrels? Was this some sort of ride share gone wrong? Where the driver didn’t bother to slow down when the squirrels wanted to get off? Or maybe they were stowaways, hitchhiking their way through life, on a daredevil adventure? Perhaps that’s it! They could have been stunt squirrels rehearsing for an action movie. Although they may have also had nefarious intentions, and were escaping from some big bird feeder heist! Or maybe they were squatters who accidentally built their nest in the underside of the truck? Blissfully unaware that it would become a recreational vehicle, traveling the backroads of Maine, forcing them to flee for their lives!

I will never know what we all saw on that Sunday morning drive. But I’ll never forget it! I also hope that the three squirrels were able to reunite after that dramatic drive!

As far as we know, no squirrel was hurt in the events that unfolded. But I will have a little chat with my squeaky squirrels about safe shenanigans!
