The dog days of summer are here! However, the work of animal shelters, rescues and pet food pantries doesn’t take a vacation. Let’s help animals in need have a good summer by lending a helping paw. Today we are reminding everyone to check in with their local animal shelters, rescues and pet food pantries to find out how you can help make the summer little easier for the dogs, cats and other animals in need. The following are a few ideas on ways to help:
- Food donations tend to be low during the summer. Find out what specific brands and types they need to keep everyone well fed. Please note some shelters only accept specific products to keep consistency in their diets. So call before purchasing.
- Do they need chew toys to help nervous dogs get through the sounds of a summer storm or nearby fireworks?
- Do they need extra fans due to the record setting heatwave? Or other items to help keep everyone comfortable.
- If you took advantage of the recent sales on towels and blankets, perhaps donate your gently used towels and blankets to make a kennel a little more comfortable.
- Does your child need help keeping up with their summer reading list? Check to see if they have a reading to the animals program. I’m sure the dogs would love to hear a good book!
- As things slow down are you looking for something to do? Maybe they could use your help so their regular volunteers could take some well-earned time off.
- Many nonprofits hold their big fundraiser events in the summer and fall. Volunteer to help not just on the day of the event, but perhaps you have behind the scenes skills that they could use to make it a big success.
- Are you a handyman looking for a project? There are plenty of ways to help at your local animal shelter.
- Check to see if they have a wish list with items you can purchase and directly ship to them.
- And financial donations are always welcome.
There are many ways you can help animals in need this summer. You just have to contact your local animal shelter, rescue or pet food pantry to find out what you can do to lend a helping paw.
