Asa here. Recently a swarm of Honey Bees descended on Market Square in Portsmouth, NH. Chuck Billy was all ready to explain in precise details why Bees swarm. However, it was boring! So I deleted his post. Instead I will explain this phenomenon with my parody of Bon Jovi’s hit song, “Runaway.” For those of you unfamiliar with the original song, here’s the link to the awesomely bad ’80s video. Personally, I think my version is better. Perhaps next time I’m on stage with Jon Bon Jovi he’ll let me sing, “The Hive’s Gonna Swarm Today!”
In the hives where they live Bees talk about their social lives
They’re made of pollen, nectar, and combs, and ruled by a Queen inside
All their life all they asked when’s the Queen gonna talk to them
But she was living in a crowded hive trying to get her message through
No one heard a single buzz she said
They couldn’t see her in her hive, what was buzzing round her head
Ooh, the hive’s gonna swarm today
Bees are expanding fast
They knew they couldn’t stay
Ooh, the hive’s gonna swarm today!
A different hive somewhere near is guaranteed to give more room
I see Bees out in the woods searching for a bigger place
Now the Queen waits inside ’cause there’s nothing left that she can do
There’s only Nurse Bees left in the hive left to look after her
You know that the Bees like fields and flowers on the quiet side
The Queen don’t really mind, it’s a new hive she hopes they find
Ooh, the hive’s gonna swarm today
Bees are expanding fast
They knew they couldn’t stay
Ooh, the hive’s gonna swarm today!
No one heard a single buzz she said
They couldn’t see her in her hive, what was buzzing round her head
Ooh, the hive’s gonna swarm today
Bees are expanding fast
They knew they couldn’t stay
Ooh, the hive’s gonna swarm today!
The Bees found a new hive
The Queen is heading there to stay
Ooh, the hive’s gonna swarm today!
