The Sting of Responsibility

My Honey Bees are in peril!  The Queen is dead, and time is of the essence if I want to save my hive!  I must take matters into my own paws!  Up until now I have been relying on Dad to take care of my struggling beehive.  But upon learning that Queen Elizzzabeth II has been officially dethroned, and that my little kingdom is in danger of dying out before the winter, I realize that I need to take responsibility.  After all they are my pet Honey Bees!

So long story short, not only are there no signs of the Queen Bee, there are no eggs in my Chuck BEEly Hive.  With no eggs, that means there is no chance of my hive surviving the winter.  Or even living to see the fall at this point.  Now according to Dad my options are I could introduce yet another new Queen from a different hive.  But not only is there the distinct possibility she’ll be rejected like the others, it being so late in the season she may not be able to make enough eggs to have a strong colony for the winter.  Another option is to take eggs from Asa’s hive, and put them in mine, with the hope that the eggs will hatch thus adding to my declining bee population while they decide who should be the next Queen.  But again that doesn’t guarantee that a new Queen will emerge to assume the throne.  My last option is I can combine my Chuck BEEly Hive with Azza Hive.  At this point introducing my Honey Bees into Azza Hive sounds like the better option.  However, it by no means guarantees that they will get along and be accepted by Asa’s Queen.  Besides Asa’s hive recently went through its own period of upheaval.

Although by far the stronger hive, Azzza Hive’s Queen, the foolishly named Queensryche, died!  But her royal subjects were aware of her advanced age and eminent demise, and therefore had a new Queen already prepared.  Sometime in the last few weeks they even had a coronation ceremony!  The death of their first Queen did slow their pace a bit.  However, overall her loyal subjects are continuing on with daily life, unfazed by the fact Asa hasn’t even named their new Queen.

On a positive note, my bees, although few in number, are still hard at work making honey.  Maybe if they knew their options they could help me decide what is best for their struggling kingdom.  I should talk with them directly!  But there is a real possibility that they are angry at me for not being a better pet owner, and for letting Dad do all the work.  What if they want to sting me?  I need a protective beekeeping suit!  Thanks to a quick Google search, I found out that a man in Australia has made a special, one of a kind, beekeeper suit for his dog, Bazz!  Now lets just hope I can convince Mom to make me a suit before it is too late!
