Thirty Minutes of Terror

This week I experienced the most terrifying half hour of my life, and Asa slept through it! We lost power on Wednesday thus starting a chain reaction of things beeping and buzzing throughout my home. Everyone knows beeping and buzzing signals danger! But did my family react? No! Mom and Dad just sat there drinking their coffees and pondering when it may come back on, while totally disregarding the present danger. Meanwhile Asa curled up and took a nap, oblivious to the sounds. He has absolutely no sense of survival skills!

I, on the other paw, immediately enacted my emergency plan and tried to usher Mom and Dad outside to safety. After several minutes, ok maybe it was just seconds, of me barking and running to and from the door, I knew I had to take drastic measures to save my family from certain doom. Using my head as a battering ram, I charged at the mudroom door, knocking it open. I knew that would get Mom’s attention. When she leaped up to check on me, I gestured towards her shoes, and then ran to the backdoor.

Thankfully Mom understood my obvious clues, put on her shoes, grabbed a leash, and followed me outside to safety. Unfortunately Dad stayed inside with Asa, but there’s only so much I can do to protect everyone. At least I was outside where it was safe and quiet, and that’s all that matters. Shortly after that, the power returned, and I happily led Mom back into the house, knowing I did a job well done.

What is the point of having an emergency plan if Mom and Dad are going to ignore it? They are lucky to have me! Those were the most terrifying 30 minutes without power.

The threat is over, but I can still hear all that beeping and buzzing ringing in my ears!
