When Happiness Shows Up

Charles Dickens once wrote, “When happiness shows up, always give it a comfortable seat.” A lovely sentiment, especially when guests are visiting during the Holidays. However, when Mr. Fezziwig gave this advice to a young Scrooge, I’m pretty sure he didn’t intend it to be a recommendation for a gift.

Case in point, after watching countless versions of A Christmas Carol with Mom and Asa, Dad took this message literally and gave Mom a new office chair for Christmas. For those who have been following us for awhile, this chair carries on Dad’s tradition of always giving Mom something practical. Now, don’t get me wrong, Mom was indeed very happy to receive this chair, and technically she does bring happiness to our work from home office, so Dad was within the realm of reason when he gave it.

Yet if Dad truly wanted to follow Dickens’ sage advice, instead of an office chair, he should have gave a couch to Asa, who would share it with me! We can all agree no one is happier than Asa, and what would be more comfortable than a bigger couch that we all can sit on? No more four paws on the floor rule. No more having Asa sneak onto it for a nap when no one is around, or being limited to just cuddles with Mom when Dad is away. I’m talking a BIG couch we can all curl up on. Now that’s what I call a comfortable chair for happiness!
