UPDATED 2022: Willard Beach in South Portland, Maine is a popular dog friendly beach. Dogs are allowed from October 1 through April 30, all day from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM. During the Summer season, between May 1 through September 30, dogs are restricted to 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Please note the new dog rules regarding leashes during the summer: From 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM dogs are allowed off-leash under voice control, but handler should have leash available. From 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM dogs must be on-leash.
No Dog Toys Allowed: More importantly the biggest change effective June 2022, “The use of Chuckit and other dog toys is prohibited at Willard Beach from May 1 through September 30. The use of chuckit and other dog toys is allowed at Willard Beach from October 1 through April 30, but only on the section of Willard Beach located between Beach Street and Fort Preble.”
Tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood adjacent to the campus of Southern Maine Community College, Willard Beach is small with approximately four acres of sand, pebbles, and rocky outcroppings, but with space to play even during high tide. This scenic beach offers views of Casco Bay including Cushing Island, Ram Island Light and Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse. There is a small free parking lot just a short walk away, and the beach offers a playground, snack bar, and restrooms. Frequented by local residents and tourists, Willard Beach is bursting with dogs during their allotted time, and is a great family friendly beach.
