Winter Hikes: Mt. Agamenticus, York, ME

With over 40 miles of trails, Mount Agamenticus in York, Maine offers a variety of options for dog friendly winter hikes.  On our most recent visit, in honor of our Golden Retriever’s 5th birthday, we hiked to the top of Second Hill with it’s elevation of 555 feet.  To get to Second Hill begin at the base of the mountain on Ring Trail, follow the signs to Rocky Road Trail, and keep going straight to Porcupine Trail, and finally to Second Hill Trail.  At the top, in winter when the trees are bare, there are very limited obstructed views of the ocean.  This is a moderate to difficult winter hike, and the trails are marked.

Dogs must remain on-leash, and as always please clean up after your pet.  Maintained by the town of York, parking lots are located near the base of the mountain, as well as along the road leading to the summit.  These lots are plowed, but signs remind visitors to please not park until after the snow is removed.  Informational kiosks with trail maps are available at the parking areas.  The park itself is free, but donations are always welcomed.

If you’re looking for an easier dog friendly winter hike, with less obstructed views, we recommend taking the Big A Trail that circles the summit of Mount Agamenticus.  For more information, including directions and current weather conditions, click here.  To learn more about additional trails in the York area, please visit our Maine Winter Hikes for Dogs recommendations or our Dog Friendly Places page.
