Get in touch with your inner wolf at Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park in Freeport, Maine. Consisting of over 200 acres, Wolfe’s Neck offers an extensive network of dog friendly hiking trails. The well marked trails are an easy hike with beautiful views of Casco Bay and the Harraseeket River. It is also a popular location for bird watching, especially Ospreys who nest on nearby Googins Island.
On the August day we visited, we combined trails to make a giant loop of the park. We began by following the Harraseeket Trail (1.8 miles) in the opposite direction of the coastline. This is an easy walk through the woods, with fewer visitors than the more popular trails along the shoreline. The Harraseeket Trail merged into the Casco Bay Trail (.5 miles) with views of surrounding islands including Eagle, Cousins, and Googins. From there we continued our hike along the shoreline on the White Pines Trail (.5 miles). Finally, we did the wooded North Loop Trail (.5 miles), which took us back to the picnic area for a well deserved scenic break for tired paws.
Dogs are allowed on-leash. Although tempting to let your dog run like a wolf, you will be asked to leave if your dog is not leashed. There is a small fee charged per person to enjoy this park, but with so many trail options it is definitely worth the price of admission. There is a large parking lot, but it does fill up quickly on weekends. Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park is located just minutes from the Freeport tourist destination of L.L. Bean, but feels like a world away.
