Asa’s Awesome Eye Update

Asa here, and I have some wonderful news to share! I went for my 4 month follow-up with my ophthalmologist for my Golden Retriever Pigmentary Uveitis, and I got good news!!!!! My apologies for all the exclamation points, but I’m super excited.

Remember when I last posted about my right eye, we were concerned because I had retinal hemorrhages? Well they are GONE! They healed on their own! Which in turns rules out the scary things we thought could have caused it. As my ophthalmologist explained, we may never know the cause. It could have been inflammation elsewhere in the body, a reaction to something, or just a fluke. But the good news is they are healed with no signs of them detected in my recent exam!

And in more good news, the bowing of my iris is no longer evident! There was a cyst that was causing the iris to slightly bow inward, and could have been affecting my vision. Well that cyst deflated on its own, and the remnant is in an area of my eye that isn’t affecting my vision at this time. Think of it like a balloon that deflates. What was filling it up is gone, but the outside remains. It just landed in a good spot.

I still have damage in my eye from Golden Retriever Pigmentary Uveitis. However, that has not progressed since my last appointment. Being told my GRPU is status quo is very good news!

Moving forward I will continue taking non-steroid eyedrops, as well as the supplement Ocu-Glo. My ophthalmologist said that although there isn’t enough evidence to say whether on not the supplement is making a difference, it doesn’t hurt to continue it considering the results I received during this exam. Just remember, before you give your dog anything, always check with your pet’s doctors first! Supplements can interact negatively with other medications and health conditions. I will also continue to wear my Rex Specs goggles when hiking and playing outside, to further protect my right eye. In addition, Mom and Dad will monitor for any visible changes in my eye or activity, and will take me be back sooner if needed. But for now I don’t need to return for my follow-up for another four months. So today – we celebrate!!!!

We are grateful for your continued support on my journey with Golden Retriever Pigmentary Uveitis, thank you! We are NOT veterinarians or ophthalmologists. If you have questions about your dog’s eyes, please have a conversation with your veterinarian.
