Asa awoke on Halloween morning, looking forward to showing off his costumes. Everything appeared fine. He went for his walk, and played with a squeaky toy. However, when Dad went to give Asa his breakfast, the light caught his eye in just the right way, and he saw that something wasn’t right. Asa’s ophthalmologist told us to get him to the ER as soon as possible if we noticed any change, so off they went.
Asa developed a blood clot and fibrin material near the opening of his pupil. It was reducing his vision, and decreasing pupil movement. Thankfully, there was an ophthalmologist at the ER / specialty clinic that day, who was able to consult with Asa’s eye specialist. Together they decided it was best to do an intraocular injection to break down the clot. As it was explained to us, by breaking it down it could help the body heal on its own, or at least improve his vision and provide relief for the time being. Asa was also prescribed steroid eyedrops to reduce the inflammation.
The procedure went well. Asa came home last night. This morning he is still groggy from the anesthesia, but a lot more alert, and his appetite has returned. We do not know what caused it. It could be unrelated to his eye disease, and caused by a bump to his head. Or it may be the Golden Retriever Pigmentary Uveitis escalating in that eye, as it did with his left eye that was removed in February. At this time, we just don’t know. So right now we continue the eyedrops, monitor for any changes (both positive and negative), and surround our little buddy with love.
We are very grateful for all your support, positive vibes and prayers on Asa’s journey with Golden Retriever Pigmentary Uveitis. We’ll be taking some time off to focus on Asa’s care. But please know we are reading your comments, and thank you. Also in a way Asa did get to dress up for Halloween. He still has the stain around his eye from the examination at the ER. He’s calling it his David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust costume.
