Beech Mountain Trail, Southwest Harbor, ME

Beech Mountain Trail in Southwest Harbor, Maine is a dog friendly hike with breathtaking views.  Part of Acadia National Park, Beech Mountain Loop Trail is a 1.2 mile moderate hike.  At the trail junction the left (eastern loop) is the most direct trail to the summit, with a steep climb up over large boulders.  The opposite side of the loop on the right is a more gradual climb with views of Long Pond.  We hiked this trail twice during our vacation last summer.

On the first day we hiked Beech Mountain Trail, we did the loop starting on the trail to the right with the gradual climb.  It was a very foggy day, and despite our optimism that it would clear by the summit, it didn’t.  However it made us focus more on the beauty of the wildflowers and bushes that line the trail.  A few days later we returned, and accessed the loop by way of the more difficult ascent on the left.  The views of Long Pond, Mansell Mountain and Bernard Mountain, were spectacular, and well worth the second trip.

Dogs are allowed on-leash.  There are multiple trailheads located at the parking lot.  To access Beech Mountain Trail, look for the marker across the road from the lot.  Also be aware that not all the trails in this area are dog friendly.  Beech Cliff Trail and Canada Cliffs Loop do NOT allow dogs due to the fact they include iron rungs and ladders.

Please Note: Acadia National Park passes are needed to access Beech Mountain Trail from May through October, but are not available for sale at the parking area.  To purchase a park pass please visit the National Park Service.
