Bug Light Park, South Portland, Maine

We bugged Mom and Dad to take us for a scenic dog walk at Bug Light Park in South Portland, Maine. This dog friendly park offers a picturesque lighthouse, and views of Casco Bay and Portland’s skyline. It is also part of the Greenbelt Walkway. Although modeled on an ancient Greek monument, beautiful Portland Breakwater Lighthouse received the nickname of “Bug Light” due to its small size, and has been guiding ships safely into port since 1875. At this historic location, there is also a monument to the Liberty Ships constructed at the emergency shipyard located on this point of land during World War II.

On the day we visited, we enjoyed a short stroll around this roughly 8 acre park, and relaxed at one of the many picnic tables and benches. We didn’t venture out on the narrow breakwater to view the lighthouse up close, because on a busy day two Golden Retrievers take up a lot of space.

Dogs are allowed at Bug Light Park off-leash and under owner’s control, with leash carried in owner’s hand. If tethered, please do not use a leash longer than 8 feet. Also although there are trash receptacles, dog waste must be picked up and carried away, and not left in the trash. You can extend your visit, by enjoying a scenic stroll along the Greenbelt Walkway. Parking is free, but the lot does fill up quickly. There is also a separate paid parking lot for those wishing to use the boat launch. Bug Light Park is a great place to relax and unwind with your dog.
Spend the day relaxing watching schooners sail past Fort Gorges built between 1861-1868 in Casco Bay.
Or stretch your legs playing in the open green space. Just be sure to respect other visitors.
Fun Fact: Made of cast iron, the columns on the side were used to hide the rivets on Portland Breakwater Lighthouse.
This tranquil park was once a bustling emergency shipyard. Behind us is a plaque listing the 274 Liberty Ships built here during WW II.
