Off the beaten path of the more popular tourist destinations in York, Maine, is dog friendly Cape Neddick Beach. Also known as Passaconaway Beach, this no frills dog friendly beach, is a popular spot for local residents. Located at the mouth of the Cape Neddick River, the beach is small with large rock outcroppings. At low tide there is plenty of room to play and the rocks provide tide pool opportunities for timid dogs, who may be afraid of the surf, but would like to get their paws wet. Please keep the tide in mind when planning your visit, because there is very little space and hidden rocks during high tide.
Between May 20 through September 20, dogs are allowed before 8:00 AM and after 6:00 PM. In the morning before 8:00 AM, dogs are allowed off-leash under voice control. However, in the evening dogs must be leashed. During the off-season, dogs are allowed all day off-leash. Please be aware too, that the rules require that dogs must be at least 10 feet away from other visitors, unless invited.
Parking is very limited at Cape Neddick Beach. From May 15 through October 15, it is resident only permit parking along Shore Road and Hutchins Boulevard, and other roads are posted as no parking any time. Directly across the street there is a house offering parking for a nominal fee. Therefore, we recommend during the summer season visiting other area beaches in York including, Long Sands, Short Sands and York Harbor Beach. However, during the off-season when parking is not an issue, Cape Neddick Beach a great dog friendly beach.
