French Falls River Walk in Jay, Maine

French Falls River Walk in Jay, Maine is a dog friendly, whimsical and peaceful walk along the Androscoggin River. Consisting of several small trails that intertwine with each other, in total it is an easy 1.2 mile hike through dense woods along the shore, with rocky outcroppings for better views of the water. The trail also briefly follows along a field with power lines, and includes an abandoned section of the original Route 4 from 1912. If you are looking for spectacular falls, there are better places to go. But if you want a scenic walk in the woods, with plenty of places to stop and enjoy the river view, then this is the trail for you.

Dogs are allowed on leash, and pet waste must be cleaned up and removed. Laminated maps are available at the trailhead, please return when you are finished your hike. The trails are part of the town of Jay’s recreational fields, and parking can be found by the ball field on French Falls Lane. Located nearby is the Whistle Stop Trail, which is a 14 mile multi-use trail connecting Jay, Wilton, and Farmington. There were a lot of ATVs enjoying the Whistle Stop Trail the day we visited, so we didn’t explore it on foot. No motorized vehicles are allowed on the French Falls Trail.

On the day we visited we began our hike at the trailhead.

Along the trail we paused to read the informative markers explaining the flora and fauna.

We smiled at the whimsical signs along the way, with inspirational quotes, funny names for local landmarks, as well as Asa’s favorite – the random duck arch.

We noticed the patches of asphalt first…

…and were surprised to find we were walking along an original section of Route 4 from 1912. Not sure when this part was rerouted, or how long it was in use before Mother Nature began slowly reclaiming the road.

Overall the French Falls River Walk in Jay, Maine is a scenic spot for an easy dog walk.
