Goodwin Forest, Eliot, Maine

Thanks to the usually warm winter weather, we were able to enjoy a dog friendly hike at Goodwin Forest in Eliot, Maine. Consisting of 81 acres through old growth forest and wetlands, this preserve maintained by the Great Works Regional Land Trust has approximately 1.79 miles of trails that range from easy to moderate.

Our hike began on the Johnson Lane Trail. This stretch is privately owned, so please be respectful of the neighbors who allow access to this land. We then explored the Shorey Brook Trail, which skirts active farmland, before coming to a crossroads. There we proceeded on the Hemlock Trail that led us through old Red Oaks and Hemlocks. Although the Hemlock Trail is a loop, we only hiked a portion of it uphill, before doubling back to the Shorey Brook Loop for a closer look at the resident Beavers’ hard work. Please note that the Shorey Brook Crossing on the Hemlock Trail is currently under construction to add better water crossings. But on the December day we visited, although icy and muddy we made it across just fine. Due to the wetlands portion, we recommend this trail for cooler weather when the mosquitoes aren’t biting.

Dogs are allowed but must be under control and kept on the trails away from the natural areas. Also please be respectful of the neighbors and wildlife who call Goodwin Forest home, as well as be polite to your fellow hikers, especially if you are off-leash. And as always, clean up after your dog and carry it out. Parking and kiosk with a map can be found on 870 Goodwin Road, Eliot, Maine.
