Know Before You Go

Normally as Memorial Day weekend approaches I’d share a long list of all the dog friendly beaches in New England. However, there is nothing normal about this year. As states begin reopening, here in Maine many beaches and hiking trails remain closed this long holiday weekend, some are only open to town residents with proper identification, and others are restricted to state residents only. All are requiring that people maintain a safe social distance, and do not congregate. Maine is also requiring that all visitors from away self-quarantine for 14 days when in the state. And that’s just Maine. New Hampshire and Massachusetts each have their own restrictions. It’s not that the authorities don’t want people to enjoy themselves. It’s just that they want to keep everyone safe as we all navigate this unprecedented situation.

As places slowly begin to reopen, we urge you to know before you go by checking with your local and state authorities before making plans this summer. In this fluid situation many things are changing on a daily and weekly basis. Please follow the restrictions and guidelines to be safe and to keep others safe. This includes obeying the new on-leash dog rules at places that once welcomed dogs off-leash. Also follow the requirement that visitors must remain “active,” and not stop to enjoy the view or relax on a beach blanket. Most importantly it means adhering to the social distancing and face covering mandates.

However, getting outside and enjoying the fresh air is important for our physical and mental wellbeing. Where it is permissible – explore local! Visit the local landmarks that make where you live special and unique. Seek out those lesser known destinations that are hidden gems right in your own backyard. Often times we take for granted the sites that are closest to us, and seek adventures further afield. Now is the time to get to know your community and state better. Just remember before heading out this long holiday weekend check with local and state authorities on restrictions and follow safety precautions.

This photo was taken during our last visit to the beach in February. We don’t know when we’ll be able to return, but we do know it will be waiting right where we left it when we do.
