My Sincere Apology

It’s rare that I admit I’m wrong. That’s because it never happens. However, for the sake of neighborhood peace, I would like to apologize for a statement made in Friday’s post, “That Time We Got Sprayed.” I hereby rescind my comment that cat spray is the worst smell. Skunks are indeed the worst!

I bet you’re wondering what brought about this change of heart. No, I wasn’t sprayed by a skunk. But one recently threatened us with a spraying because he was displeased with me. It all happened early Sunday morning while on neighborhood patrol. In the distance we could see something small, black and fuzzy in the road. Mom started cooing, “It’s a kitten!” However, upon hearing Mom’s cooing, the little fellow stopped what he was doing and spun around to face us. Then it quickly spun the other direction and aimed his tail at us locked and loaded! It wasn’t a kitten, it was a baby skunk!

We were trapped! He was blocking the one way to get back to our home! We instantly froze in our tracks. Even Asa grasped the seriousness of this situation, and didn’t try to play with him. Instead he quietly stayed by Dad’s side. It seemed like an eternity as we all just stood there. That’s when we noticed some rustling in the underbrush on the side of the road. The baby skunk noticed it too, and quickly ran off in that direction, disappearing into the woods. We all breathed a refreshing sigh of relief.

After waiting a few more moments to make sure the road was clear and this wasn’t some sort of trap, we headed straight home from neighborhood patrol. As we passed the area where the baby skunk boldly stood his ground, Asa raised his nose high to sniff the lingering smell of skunk wafting through the air. I just wanted to get home as quickly as possible, thankful that I wasn’t forced to wear that cologne.

This brings me to my apology. I’m sorry to all skunks everywhere who I may have inadvertently offended by stating cat spray smells worse. With all due respect, that honor definitely goes to you!

Baby skunk, I hope you accept my apology. And please know that I am flattered that you follow my blog!
