Not Yet Asa

Well Asa’s day is off to a disappointing start. In the wee hours of the morning Asa awoke filled with excitement. He was making so much noise spinning and dancing, that Mom came downstairs around 3:30 AM to check that he was ok. Asa normally awakes bright eyed and bushy tail, but today’s behavior was extreme even by his standards. He greeted Mom’s blurry gaze by happily running in circles around the kitchen, jumped in glee, and repeatedly pawed at the gate to go into the Christmas tree room. Assuming Asa was excited over the first snow, Mom let him out to play. However, Asa just stood at the door wanting to come back inside. That’s when it dawned on me, Asa thought today is Christmas morning!

I really can’t blame the little fellow for being confused. After all the signs were all there. On Friday Mom decorated the house for Christmas, on Saturday we got our pictures taken with Santa, on Sunday Mom baked gingerbread cookies while friends visited, and overnight it began snowing. If this was a Hallmark Movie, the next logical step would be today is Christmas.

However, life is not a Hallmark Movie, and today is not Christmas. Asa came to this disappointing conclusion when he realized there were no presents under the tree. Oh sure I could have explained the reason there weren’t any gifts is because he’s on Santa naughty list for acting like a goofball during our photo session with the jolly ol’ elf. But then how would I explain the lack of presents for me? After all, we all know I’m on the nice list this year. So I opted to remain on the nice list by not teasing my easily excitable little brother. Instead I sat him down and explained to him he still had a ways to wait before that magical morning.

Have patience Asa, Christmas will be here soon.
