Our Dog Dads

Leave it to Asa to accomplish something that Lemmy and I never did.  Asa met his biological father, Daddy Spenser, at the New England Golden Jubilee.  Now I’ve never had the pleasure to meet my father, Daddy Eclipse, face to face.  However, I’m lucky that I can keep in touch with him through social media.  Lemmy, on the other paw, wasn’t so lucky.  He spent his life searching for Daddy Shamis.

Lemmy wasn’t the most tech savvy dog.  Would you believe he didn’t have a social media account until I came along?  From as far as I can tell, his biological father didn’t either.  Although Lemmy didn’t have so much as a MySpace page, he did know how to Google.  So for hours on end he would search the internet for Daddy Shamis.  With each click of the mouse, Lemmy’s imagination made his father bigger and better, and his adventures took him to the far corners of the planet, which is why he never had time to visit.  In fact, by the time I joined the family, Lemmy was convinced that his Daddy was the “Most Interesting Dog in the Universe.”  Luckily for all of us, Lemmy’s Momma Butter and Grandpa Thor kept him grounded.  Perhaps Lemmy finally got to meet Daddy Shamis over the Rainbow Bridge, and together they go on grand adventures.

As for Asa, Lemmy would no doubt have been crestfallen by how anticlimactic his meeting was with his biological father.  Daddy Spenser came bounding through the crowd to say hello.  However, Asa was more interested in the tennis ball his Daddy was holding than to listen to his fatherly advice.  At least now we know where Asa got his tennis ball obsession!  Also on the bright side, Asa behaved himself and didn’t steal the ball from Daddy Spenser while he was talking to him.

I’m going to repeat the reminder I posted on Mother’s Day.  Dogs, if you’re lucky enough to know who your Dog Dad is, please check-in with him this Father’s Day.  This holiday isn’t just for two-legged fathers, and it would be a nice way to honor the memory of my dear brother, Lemmy and his Daddy Shamis.  Happy Father’s Day Daddy Eclipse and Daddy Spenser!
