Our Music Critic

There’s no denying that Asa enjoys music. When he hears it, his ears perk up, his tail wags, he’s even been known to prance, woogle and dance to it. And yes, he can’t resist writing a parody or two of his favorite songs. Until now we thought Asa liked all genres of music. However, we learned yesterday there is one instrument he does not enjoy.

This startling discovery came when Mom was catching up on episodes of “Victoria” on Masterpiece Theater. Asa was curled up on his bed in front of the TV sleeping, when all of a sudden he leaped to his paws making what can be best described as a guttural moaning barking noise. Asa has never made such a sound before, and his sudden outburst worried Mom. She thought perhaps he injured himself while playing in the snow earlier. But after a quick check, she dismissed it to some sort of a nightmare, and rewound her show to the part he interrupted. That’s when Asa whirled around from Mom’s side, faced the TV and let out an uncharacteristic low growl. It took a moment, but Mom soon made the connection that Asa was reacting to the organ music in that scene!

She rewound the video further back so Asa could have time to relax before the offending music came on again. When it did, sure enough this time Asa abruptly left the room and went into my crate. Clearly the little guy didn’t like the pipe organ music, but not wanting a confrontation, he politely excused himself from the room. That left us wondering what Asa didn’t like about it. Was it the low vibrating resonance of the pipe organ? The music itself? Or just that particular tune? We may never know because for the rest of the episode, there wasn’t any more pipe organ music to offend his delicate ears. But I do know one thing. At least Asa won’t be composing any organ concertos any time soon!

Asa’s Rebuttal: As a musician, I found that particular piece as played on “Victoria” to sound a bit forced and the pitch did not work for me. However, when it comes to the pipe organ, I find it to be a fine instrument when properly played.

Just because I love music, it doesn’t mean I have to like all music.
