Pawtuckaway State Park, Nottingham, NH

Consisting of over 32 miles of trails, Pawtuckaway State Park in Nottingham, New Hampshire is a popular place to go hiking. However, before you bring your pup, you need to be familiar with the dog rules. Dogs are allowed on-leash on the TRAILS ONLY from May 1 – September 30. Dogs are NOT permitted at the beach, lake or campground area during the summer season. Also dogs are NOT permitted through the main park entrance from May 1 – September 30. However, dogs can access the trails from Reservation Road and Round Pond Road during that time. Therefore we recommend visiting with your dog during the off-season from October 1 – April 30.

With that said, Pawtuckaway State Park offers a variety of trail options. There are panoramic summit views on the Mountain Trail network, unique geological features along the Boulder Trail, and opportunities to see the wildlife along the Fundy Trail.

On the October day we visited, we hiked the Fundy Trail because we were interested in exploring the extensive network of stonewalls along it. Ranging from old foundations, to animal enclosures, to boundary markers up steep hills, to even the remnants of walls outlining an old road, there are many interesting features along this trail. Also if you’re quiet, you may catch a glimpse of the deer, beavers, and great blue herons, who call this state park home. Fundy Trail is an easy 3.5 mile in and out hike.

As noted, dogs are allowed on the hiking trails only, and must be on-leash, year round. Please obey the specific rules regarding entrance and other areas where dogs are NOT allowed between May 1 and September 30. For more information visit NH State Parks Pets Policy. As always, please clean up after your pet, in this carry-out park. There is a nominal entrance fee. Also because parking is limited at this very popular park, reservations to hike are strongly recommended during the summer season. For more information, visit the NH State Park Pawtuckaway website.

Fundy Trail is a fun day, easy on the paws.
With opportunities to pause and watch the wildlife at Burnham’s Marsh.
Or marvel at the ginormous glacial erratic found along this trail.
We stopped to ponder about the previous generations who used this area in Nottingham, New Hampshire.
