Predator, Prey, and Goofy Golden

The Coyotes are really getting bold this winter. Yesterday I witnessed one stalking a Deer in my yard! Worst yet, Asa was in the fenced in area oblivious to it all! Asa, how many times must I remind you that you need to be alert at all times?

We had just got back from a walk, and I went immediately inside to supervise Mom making my breakfast. That’s when I happened to glance out the window and noticed a Deer in our side yard nibbling on a bush. However, before I could bark at that, I noticed movement in the woods. There lurking in the shadows was a Coyote!

Quickly I looked at where Dad and Asa were in the fenced in area. Dad obviously noticed the Coyote too. Meanwhile, Asa was making a snow angel! For someone who is a self-proclaimed Dire Wolf, the fiercest predator that once roamed these lands, Asa sure doesn’t act like one. Luckily though after rolling in the snow, his fur was all puffed out and he looked intimidating at twice the size of the Coyote. It’s probably good too that Asa didn’t notice either the Deer or the Coyote, because he no doubt would have invited them inside to play.

Thankfully, my story has a happy ending. Dad started making a lot of noise by banging the lid of our poop barrel, and the Coyote ran off into the woods in one direction and the Deer in the opposite. I’m pretty sure thanks to Dad’s heroism, combined with my barking, we saved that Deer’s life! As for Asa, I think after our walks from now on I better forget supervising my breakfast and instead keep a close watch on my goofy little brother. Coyotes are not to be taken lightly, especially if they’ve moved on from the bunny to belly restaurant, and are now focusing their attention on bigger meals!

A reconstruction of the events that took place in our yard yesterday.
