Royal River Park, Yarmouth, Maine

Royal River Park in Yarmouth, Maine is a scenic walk through history. Follow the path along the river, stopping periodically to read the interpretive signs describing the mills that once depended on the three waterfalls at this former industrial site. Next wind your way through the woods to marvel at the hemlocks, some of which are estimated to be 200 years old! Or cross over the pedestrian bridge to continue your walk to see Cotton Mills Falls. Finally find a quiet spot by the water to sit and watch the many ducks who call this park home, or take a quick dip to cool your paws in the water. The network of trails is approximately 2.6 miles, depending on how much you choose to explore.

On the day we visited, we skipped the trail that leads to the town’s sidewalks, and instead took a pleasant 1.3 mile loop through the park. Then we followed a dog with a tennis ball across the overflow parking lot, to a quieter spot at this popular park, and sat on a bench while watching a couple of pups play fetch in the water.

Dogs are allowed at Royal River Park. However, the town of Yarmouth is currently updating their rules regarding dogs at the park. As of our visit in October 2021, dogs are allowed on-leash between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM, and from November 16 through April 19 they must be on-leash from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Leashes are required at ALL TIMES while on the paved pathways, and during events at the park. Dogs are allowed off-leash during regular park hours in the designated off-leash area at “Picnic Point.” As always, please be respectful of the other visitors enjoying the park and the wildlife who call it home. Also clean up after your pets in this carry out park.

We’d like to give a big thank you to our friend, Friday, for telling us about this park!
