The Busy Dog and the Lazy Bee

Leave it to a Honey Bee to take advantage of Asa’s inquisitive good nature. As I mentioned in a previous post, spring is off to a slow start here in Maine. Whereas we usually have a lush field of dandelions for our Honey Bees to feast on, this year they are just starting to bloom. Asa likes to help the Bees by searching for dandelions. Alright, I admit he eats them, which isn’t too helpful to the pollinators this time of year, when food sources are sparse. But he is good at finding dandelions. In fact, his search technique has proved quite useful to at least one lazy Bee.

While in the yard the other day, Mom noticed a Honey Bee hanging out on Asa’s back. This isn’t the first time one has landed on us. Even Honey Bees can’t resist the sweet nature of a Golden Retriever. Usually though, they land for a moment to rest, and then fly away to continue collecting pollen. But not this Bee. This one decided to hitch a ride on Asa as he searched the yard for dandelions.

Impatient to start our walk, Dad gave up waiting for the Bee to leave on her own terms, and leashed up Asa. The Bee remained and started to ride along on neighborhood patrol with us. But then Asa spotted one of the few dandelions in the yard, and went over to take a closer look. Sure enough, the Honey Bee flew off and started collecting pollen from the flower, happy to have reached her destination.

Nope, that’s not a giant Honey Bee in a field of wheat. That’s Asa’s little friend hitching a ride.
Another view of Asa’s hitchhiker.
I like to think of myself as a combination of concierge and ride share for Honey Bees.
