Twelve Days of Spring

We are five days into springtime in Maine, and so far we have received snow, sleet, rain, fog, and a quick glimpse of sun. Sometimes all within a matter of a couple of hours! Now I know what you’re thinking, “what do you expect with Dad so brazenly taking the snow tires off the car on the first day of spring?” And I agree, he really should have consulted with Angel Chuck Billy’s snow making plans first. But what’s done is done. So while I wait for better, or at least more consistent weather to arrive, I will occupy my time by singing this timeless classic. My parody of the “12 Days of Christmas,” except I’m singing about spring! For those with not as much spare time on their paws, feel free to scroll to the bottom and read up instead of down to get the quick recap!

On the first day of springtime
Mother Nature sent to me
A sparrow in an old wreath

On the second day of springtime
Mother Nature sent to me
Two tulips
And a sparrow in an old wreath

On the third day of springtime
Mother Nature sent to me
Three days of sleet
Two tulips
And a sparrow in an old wreath

On the fourth day of springtime
Mother Nature sent to me
Four forsythia
Three days of sleet
Two tulips
And a sparrow in an old wreath

On the fifth day of springtime
Mother Nature sent to me
Five squirrel friends!
Four forsythia
Three days of sleet
Two tulips
And a sparrow in an old wreath

On the sixth day of springtime
Mother Nature sent to me
Six singing robins
Five squirrel friends!
Four forsythia
Three days of sleet
Two tulips
And a sparrow in an old wreath

On the seventh day of springtime
Mother Nature sent to me
Seven days of wind
Six singing robins

Five squirrel friends!
Four forsythia
Three days of sleet
Two tulips
And a sparrow in an old wreath

On the eighth day of springtime
Mother Nature sent to me
Eight muddy paw prints
Seven days of wind
Six singing robins

Five squirrel friends!
Four forsythia
Three days of sleet
Two tulips
And a sparrow in an old wreath

On the ninth day of springtime
Mother Nature sent to me
Nine bunnies bouncing
Eight muddy paw prints
Seven days of wind
Six singing robins

Five squirrel friends!
Four forsythia
Three days of sleet
Two tulips
And a sparrow in an old wreath

On the tenth day of springtime
Mother Nature sent to me
Ten minutes of sunshine
Nine bunnies bouncing
Eight muddy paw prints
Seven days of wind
Six singing robins

Five squirrel friends!
Four forsythia
Three days of sleet
Two tulips
And a sparrow in an old wreath

On the 11th day of springtime
Mother Nature sent to me
Eleven piping plovers
Ten minutes of sunshine
Nine bunnies bouncing
Eight muddy paw prints
Seven days of wind
Six singing robins

Five squirrel friends!
Four forsythia
Three days of sleet
Two tulips
And a sparrow in an old wreath

On the 12th day of springtime
Mother Nature sent to me
Twelve weeks of waiting
Eleven piping plovers
Ten minutes of sunshine
Nine bunnies bouncing
Eight muddy paw prints
Seven days of wind
Six singing robins

Five squirrel friends!
Four forsythia
Three days of sleet
Two tulips
And a sparrow in an old wreath!

Even the sparrow in the old wreath looks upset by the weather!
Angel Chuck Billy, you’ve made your point! Next year Dad promises to consult with you and your snow delivery plans before taking the snow tires off of Mom’s car! Now can we have spring weather?!
