Winter Hikes: Maudslay State Park, MA

This weekend Chuck Billy and Asa went in search of spring at Maudslay State Park in Newburyport, Massachusetts.  Spoiler Alert: We didn’t find spring.  We did find though a magical winter wonderland filled with all sorts of things to explore for a perfect dog friendly hike.  Consisting of 480 acres of historic landscapes including an extensive network of carriage roads, open meadows and scenic overlooks of the Merrimack River, Maudslay State Park is a popular place for dogs to stretch their legs and chase away cabin fever.

On the day we visited, we explored the ruins of the former Moseley family estate.  To access that area, rather than hit the network of trails directly across the street from the parking lot, after crossing the road, turn left, walk past the private home, and head to the second entrance.  There you will find tree line paths, stone bridges, the remains of the Moseley estate, and the formal gardens shrouded in snow awaiting spring.  You can also find a small pet cemetery which is the final resting place for the Moseley family’s beloved Jack Russell terriers and horses.

Dogs are allowed on-leash.  Parking is available in a large paved lot across the street.  Parking per car for MA residents is $5.00 and $6.00 for out of state visitors.  Please note that although the park is open year round, parts of the trail are closed from November 1 through March 31 to accommodate roosting bald eagles.  Restrooms are available at the parking lot, and we were pleased to find them unlocked in March.

To plan your visit, including directions, current weather, and more, please visit our Maudslay State Park page.  There you can also see photos and videos of the park when we visited in the summer.  For additional winter hikes as well as our recommendations for a dog day out, including hiking trails, scenic dog walks, and dog beaches, please visit our Dog Friendly Places page.
