Of Mice and Spiders

I wanted to give you an update on our adventures with the Wolf Spider and Field Mice from last week.  First off, I’d like to sincerely apologize to the Wolf Spider.  Turns out it wasn’t a male, but a female…expecting a litter of pups!  I am honored that she chose our poop barrel to lay her eggs, and bring new itty bitty tiny Wolves into the world.  But her choice of whelping box did leave us with a bit of a predicament on dump day.

Although Mom was initially scared by the ginormous Wolf Spider, upon hearing that she was sitting on a nest of eggs, she immediately asked Dad to rescue them before taking the barrel to the dump.  It was a delicate operation to move Momma Wolf Spider and her eggs.  But as you can see by the photo, she eventually climbed onto the tube with her babies, and Dad safely delivered her to an undisclosed location.  The location is undisclosed just incase predators are reading this blog, and because Mom would rather not know where there will be a sudden influx of creepy crawly baby Spiders.  As for me, just like Wilbur in “Charlotte’s Web,” I promise to raise those Wolf Spider pups to the best of my abilities.  I know this vow means that Mom may never go into the backyard again, but it is a small price to aid my fellow Wolves and keep our growing pack together.

As for the Field Mice attacking our beehives, well as expected they got careless and let their guard down just long enough for Dad’s traps to end their burglary spree!  He caught two Mice in two days, and the hives haven’t been disturbed since then.  Now as a precaution I wanted to leave them next to the hives as a warning for other Mice.  You know, like how they displayed dead Pirates at colonial seaports to warn other nefarious characters to stay away.  But Mom felt bad about their deaths, and she and Dad gave the Field Mice a proper burial in our wild flower garden.  So I’m happy to report all is right in my kingdom once more.  Well sort of, does anyone have advice on how to take care of a litter of itty bitty Wolf Spiders?
